TMJ Massage

TMJ Massage

Relieve tension. Create more ease. Give your jaw some space.

Jaw tension can be surprisingly uncomfortable.

You may notice tightness around your jaw or face, tension in your temples, headaches, neck and shoulder tension, or simply a feeling that you're holding tension in this area.

At Body Moves, I use my Jing Method clinical massage techniques to work with the muscles and soft tissues around the jaw, face, neck and upper body.

This is a focused, hands-on treatment designed to help reduce muscular tension and create more ease around the jaw.

What does TMJ massage involve?

The temporomandibular joints (TMJs) are the two joints where your lower jaw connects with your skull. They are involved whenever you chew, speak, swallow or open your mouth.

The muscles that control the jaw don't work in isolation. Tension can involve the muscles of the face and jaw as well as the neck, shoulders and upper back.

Your treatment will be tailored to what you're experiencing and may include work to:

  • The muscles around the jaw and cheek

  • The temples and face

  • The neck

  • The shoulders and upper back

  • Other areas that may be contributing to your overall pattern of tension

I may use a combination of deep tissue massage, myofascial techniques, trigger point work, acupressure and gentle stretching from the Jing Method.

Intraoral massage

Where appropriate, your treatment may also include gentle intraoral massage techniques. These allow access to some of the muscles inside the mouth that are involved in jaw movement and tension.

I will explain any intraoral work before carrying it out and it will only be performed with your consent.

I always wear a fresh pair of disposable gloves for any intraoral work, following appropriate hygiene procedures.

You can ask questions about intraoral massage before or during your appointment, and your comfort and consent are always the priority.

Who might benefit?

TMJ massage may be helpful if you experience:

  • Jaw or facial muscle tension

  • Tightness from clenching your jaw

  • Tension around the temples

  • Headaches associated with muscular tension

  • Tightness through the neck and shoulders

  • A feeling of stiffness or tension when opening your mouth

  • General tension that seems to be concentrated around your jaw and face

You don't need to have a diagnosis to book this treatment.

A little more than just the jaw

One of the things I value about the Jing Method is that it doesn't require me to look at one area in isolation.

If your jaw is feeling tight, we can look at the wider pattern of tension through your face, neck, shoulders and upper body rather than simply working harder on the jaw itself.

The aim isn't to force the body to change. It's to create the conditions for the muscles and tissues to soften and for movement to feel easier.
